Amanda Epps and Dr Shazli Azmi EASD Highlights

Invokana®(canagliflozin) is indicated for the treatment of adults with insufficiently controlled type 2 diabetes mellitus as an adjunct to diet and exercise:

  • As monotherapy when metformin is considered inappropriate due to intolerance or contraindications
  • In addition to other medicinal products for the treatment of diabetes

While at the 59th EASD Conference in Hamburg, Menarini caught up with UK diabetes experts Amanda Epps, Lead Diabetes Specialist Nurses in East Kent, and Dr Shazli Azmi, Consultant Diabetologist and Endocrinologist from Manchester. They have shared with us their highlights and discuss the importance of sick day rules, MDT management of type 2 diabetic patients and the introduction of artificial intelligence in patient care.

Amanda Epps- Lead Diabetes Nurse, East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust

Amanda Epps is the Lead Diabetes Specialist Nurse at East Kent hospital University NHS foundation trust. Amanda is a non-medical prescriber and an advanced nurse practitioner; Amanda has recently completed an MSc in Diabetes at Kings College London. Amanda is the founder of the Diabetes Specialist Nurse Forum UK, an online support group for diabetes specialists that now has over 2000 members. The forum won the prestigious QIC healthcare professional of the year award in 2018 and were invited to meet the prime minister at downing street for their work improving diabetes specialist HCP networking across the UK. Amanda is a committee member for the DISN UK group. Amanda is a healthcare professional advisory board member for Action for Diabetes and Help Madina charities. Amanda has a personal interest in type 1 diabetes care as her son was diagnosed aged 7 and recently, she was also diagnosed later in life with the condition.

Dr Shazli Azmi- Consultant in Diabetes and Endocrinology and Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust and the University of Manchester

Dr Shazli Azmi has a specialist clinical interest in the management of complex type 2 diabetes and micro/macrovascular complications. Her research interest is in diabetic neuropathy, small fibre neuropathy and neuropathic pain. Her previous work detailed metabolic and neuropathy phenotyping in subjects with obesity, impaired glucose tolerance and diabetes mellitus and the development of a surrogate marker for neuropathy. Dr Azmi's current research is primarily focused on surrogate end points for human diabetic neuropathy and other peripheral neuropathies. She has >60 peer reviewed publications and is currently co-supervisor for 2 PhD students. She is on the editorial board for Clinical Therapeutics and Diabetes Therapy. She recently awarded the MRC/NIHR CARP (Clinical Academic Research Partnership) fellowship.
