Hannah Beba and Alia Gilani - EASD Highlights

Invokana®(canagliflozin) is indicated for the treatment of adults with insufficiently controlled type 2 diabetes mellitus as an adjunct to diet and exercise:

  • As monotherapy when metformin is considered inappropriate due to intolerance or contraindications
  • In addition to other medicinal products for the treatment of diabetes

EASD insights and highlights- Hannah Beba and Alia Gilani

While at the 59th EASD Conference in Hamburg, Menarini caught up with two of UK’s leading diabetes pharmacists, Alia Gilani- Senior Diabetes Clinical Pharmacist from Sheffield and Hannah Beba- Consultant Diabetes Pharmacists from Leeds, reviewing the holistic management of type 2 diabetic patients, the importance of patient choice and early start of SGLT2is.

Hannah is one of the few Consultant Diabetes Pharmacists in the UK, Chair of the Diabetes Steering Group and Expert Reference Group for cardio-renal-metabolic medicine in Leeds. Further afield, Hannah is a committee member of both the Council of Healthcare Professionals at Diabetes UK and for the Primary Care Diabetes Society. Hannah also supports students on the University of Warwick MSc Programme. Hannah’s appointment takes her into a primary care focused, integrated care role. Hannah believes that here there are fantastic opportunities for multidisciplinary teams to provide holistic, unparalleled care to people living with diabetes. Hannah is driven to tackle inequalities in care and looks to tackle this in her forward agenda.

Alia Gilani- Senior Diabetes Clinical Pharmacist

Alia is a Senior Diabetes Clinical Pharmacist whose interests lie in ethnic inequalities and diabetes. She helped established and run a bi-lingual medication review service in NHS Glasgow in 2002. This was the “MELT” service (Minority Ethnic Long Term medicines Service) which operated for an over a decade. The MELT was an open referral medication review service which allowed referrals to be received from both primary and secondary care. She has received several awards for her work in which the service has been recognised both locally and nationally. She has chaired the NHS Glasgow Diabetes Ethnicity and Inequalities Group in the past.
